UN promotes universal access to Sus
UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro announced the launch of a High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All.
The Sustainable Energy for All group is a body whose aim is to catalyze actions at all levels of society and government to achieve the following three goals by 2030:
- ensuring universal access to modern energy services,
- doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and
- doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
The UN report, "Energy for a Sustainable Future" recommends the following actions to achieve the goals of ensuring universal energy access and of reducing global energy Intensity:
- A global campaign should be launched in support of “Energy for Sustainable Development.
- All countries should prioritize the goals through the adoption of appropriate national strategies.
- Finance, including innovative financial mechanisms and climate finance, should be made available by the international community.
- Private-sector participation in achieving the goals should be emphasized and encouraged.
- The United Nations system should make “Energy for Sustainable Development” a major institutional priority.
